in a realistic design, the head, thorax and abdomen containing two round demantoid garnet eyes, one oval sapphire measuring approximately 6. 45 x 5.24 mm, and nine oval and pear shape emeralds, the wings containing two pear shape cabochon cut crystal opals measuring approximately 16.15 x 12.00 mm and 16.30 x 11.90 mm respectively, the brooch containing a mix of 112 old mine and old European cut diamonds weighing approximately 2.11 carats total. Accompanied by a case signed A La Vieille Russie. 14.90 dwts. The brooch measures approximately 55.00 x 40.00 mm. Gem Characteristics (graded in setting) Sapphire It is the opinion of the gemologist (Eblen) that the sapphire in this brooch has internal characteristics consistent with those observed in natural sapphire that has not been color/clarity enhanced with heat treatment. Furthermore, though no conclusive determination can be made, the stone exhibits certain specific internal characteristics (parallel planes of particulate rutile "silk" and an intensely saturated color) that may suggest a geographic origin of Kashmir. Demantoid The stones exhibit diagnostic "horsetail" inclusions. Opals The stones exhibit a minor degree of crazing which is confined to shallow depths.
