Watercolor and Pen and Ink Fraktur for Lydia Rebecca Waters (b. 1853), attributed to George Gottfried Ephraim Burger (Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1790-1861), intricately designed and drawn in red, yellow, green, blue, and black, incorporating a wide variety of floral and foliate devices, and elaborate lettering typical of the artist's work, 15 1/8 x 11 7/8 in., (minor edge losses, old creasing, fading to ink), in a modern frame. Literature: For similar examples attributed to Burger, see "Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, fraktur: an initial survey," Lynn A. Brocklebank, in The Magazine Antiques , January 1986, pp. 258-67. Note: George Burger was a German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania afer 1816, and married Elisabeth Schumacher of Hempfield Township in March 1818. Lydia Rebecca Waters, for whom this fraktur was made, was the daughter of Elisabeth Burger, and the granddaughter of the artist. Uncommonly for Burger, this work is lettered in English.
