Attributed to Joseph Stone (Massachusetts, 1774-1815) Portrait of a Young Woman Unsigned. Oil on cardboard, 20 1/4 x 15 1/2 in., in an early molded black-painted frame. Condition: Rippling to cardboard, large tack holes at corners, minor specks of loss. Note: Joseph Stone is referred to in an article written by renowned folk art scholar Arthur Kern as the "Painter of the Almond-shaped Eyes" (see www.incollect.com). Several works also attributed to the artist were offered at the landmark Sotheby's auction of Bert and Nina Fletcher Little's collection in 1994.
