oil on canvas 76 x 92. 3 cm (30 x 36 1/4 in.) signed lower right This work will be featured in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné PROVENANCE Sotheby`s, London, 29 June 1988, lot 141 Christie`s New York, May 5, 2005, lot 307 Acquired at the above sale by the present owner The present lot depicts the famous pergola in Marquayrol, an artist’s mansion in France's Midi-Pyrénées region, which he bought in 1900 after almost a decade of searching for an ideal home. The work reflected the brilliant colors and scintillating brushwork that characterize so much of the artist’s landscapes after he left Paris and is a particularly fine example of Martin's mature style. As many art historians noted, Martin’s painting, particularly those of Marquayrol, reflect the clarity of light and vivid coloring of the south. According to Claude Juskiewenski, 'this move to the Lot at the age of forty marks a decisive turning point in his artistic output. Muses and lyres disappear from his canvases and he dares to confront daily the light of the south' (Claude Juskiewenski, 1860-1943 (exhibition catalogue), Cahors & Toulouse, 1993, p. 98).
