... A MODEL BY ROBERT-JOSEPH AUGUSTE; Each on circular fluted foot, the tapering stems hung with laurel swags, the double-scroll arms with central urn finial, with detachable wax pans. Engraved on base, wax pans and sockets with a crest and baronÕs coronet. The crest and coronet is that Tollemache, for John Tollemache (1805-1890) of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk. He was the largest landowner in Cheshire and was created 1st Baron Tollemache in 1876; Mark of John Hunt and Robert Roskell, London, 1877 on bases, branches and wax pans bases stamped HUNT & ROSKELL LATE STORR AND MORTIMER; 106.5 OT; Note: This model of candelabra was supplied by the French royal goldsmith Robert-Joseph Auguste in 1766 to the 4th Duke of Bedford, the English ambassador to Paris. In turn, the Òfine festoonÓ model was widely imitated by English goldsmiths who supplied numerous patrons eager for silver in the latest French taste.
