Provenance: from the estate of a prominent European & Texas collector.Jose Maria Mijares began his artistic studies in 1936, at the School of Art of San Alejandro in Havana, where his professors included Romanach, Menocal, Valderrama, Ramon Loy, Caravia, and many others. Mijares credits one of his most influential professors, Ponce, with helping him develop his own style of expression. Although he did leave Cuba, the country never left his soul, and the images of his native country blossomed frequently on his canvases. Mijares is world renowned for his mastery of oil painting and his pioneering exploration of geometric abstraction in Cuban art of the 1950s, which led to his neo-baroque compositions developed during his exile period out of Cuba. His influential career placed him in the company of Carlos Enriquez, Rene Portocarrero, & Cundo Bermudez who later became known as the Havana School. He was a prolific painter, even in his waning years, and worked six hours a day, beginning at sunrise daily. He resided in Miami from 1968 until his death in 2004.
