Louis Vidal (France, 1831 - 1892) framed oil on canvas depicting a horse racing scene in bright colors. Gilt frame measures 25-2/6" in height and 28-1/8" in width, with the sight image measuring 17-1/2" in height and 20-1/2" in width. All measurements are approximate. Louis Vidal was born in 1831, & later was a student of Antoine Louis Barye and Rouillard. He was blind and did his sculptures entirely by touch and feel. His final clays were oftentimes edited slightly, for obvious reasons, by the elder Barye and also by his son Alfred. Vidal exhibited at the Salon from 1859 through 1882, & was patronized by the Rothchilds as well as Princess Mathilde. The notation on his sculpture "The Fallen Elk" in parentheses below his signature indicates (in French) that he signed as Vidal (areugle) the blind). He died in 1892.
