New England painted pine sailor’s gameboard , inscribed Presented to B. A. Merrill by his Father July 12th 1857 , the front adorned with a central checkerboard flanked by American flags, the reverse with a large relief carved ship, 12 1/4” x 21”. Provenance: Northeast Auctions, August 5th, 2000, from the collection of Virginia Ramsey-Pope Cave, previously from the Art Institute of Chicago, Sotheby’s, January 1997, lot 1531.
