Jacob Weber (Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 1760-1850) , painted pine trinket box made for his great granddaughter Elisabeth Mosser in the year of her birth 1846. The lid and sides decorated with large stylized flowers and the facade with a landscape with house and trees amidst rolling hills, all on a dark blue ground, supported by bracket feet, 6" h., 10 1/4" w. An early handwritten note details the descent of this box in the Weber family. In recent years a debate has formed around the true maker(s) of these boxes. Both Jacob and Jonas are thought to be the maker(s) and birth dates ranging from 1760 - 1810 have been suggested. The present example helps solidify the attribution to Jacob as at least the first maker of these boxes. In addition, the fact that it was made for Elizabeth in the year of her birth gives us an insight into why these were made.
