Sally Mann is perhaps best known for her Intimate Family series, which captures her young children and husband on their family farm and its surrounding landscape in Virginia. This body of work has been both celebrated and criticized for the tension between innocence and sensuousness expressed in images of her often nude children swimming, sleeping, dressing up, or nursing cuts. Mann's landscape series Mother Land grew out of this project. Taken with a large format camera in rural Virginia and Georgia, the photographer views these images as portraits of sites intertwined with human history that convey the exquisite beauty of the natural environment. The antique lenses she employs create distortions and plays of light that evoke a sense of memory and time both past and passing.
