Cameo-carved cowrie shell, India, 1950s; Signed S. DALI; 1 3/4" x 3" x 2"; Provenance: Collection of Martin Eidelberg, New York; In 1942 Dalí was commissioned by New York theater producer Luther Greene to design his name as an alphabet of nude figures to serve as his letter head. Greene subsequently ordered cowrie shells to be carved in India with Dalí's design for "G" to be given to guests who visited his subterranean apartment and grotto on East 58th Street.
