(18th/19th Century) Portrait of an Elizabethan Lady oil on canvas 52 x 46 inches. In fair, stable condition overall consistent with age. Canvas has been re-lined. Tear to the lower-right quadrant of the canvas approximately 2 x 1 inches in size, with associated areas of loss to the paint. Craquelure throughout. Visible bulge along the central horizontal plane of the canvas consistent with the placement of a horizontal cross bar. Visible areas of retouch to the finger tips of the subject's proper-left hand, particularly visible on the index finger. Reverse of the canvas with three patches of repair, the largest of which is 4 x 2 1/2 inches. Examination under UV light reveals an uneven varnish, as well as scattered areas of retouch throughout, particularly visible on the lips and fingers of the subject.
