Japanese, first quarter 20th century. A very fine Satsuma pottery koro censer of round form raised on three ogee bracket feet and having pierced domical lid (repaired) with fu dog finial, the body decorated with two clusters of gilt bordered peony blossoms on stem and the lid having Gosu Blue ground with gilded and enameled lotus blossoms. Censer interior with charring commensurate with use. Underside with Shimazu clan mark and secondary mark likely for Hyozan (Hiozan) of the Taisho Period (1912-1926). Approximate height 7.75", width over handles 5.25".
