Spode (English, founded 1767), circa first quarter 19th century. Three pieces of early earthenware comprising a circular dinner plate, a rectangular serving dish and a cream/sauce ladle, all with chinoiserie decoration printed in blue underglaze and enameled in red over the glaze. The circular plate in the Flying Pennant I pattern; the serving dish decorated with four kylin or foo dogs and entwining scaly snakes with landscape and architectural background. The ladle decorated to the bowl with mountainous landscape. Apparently all unmarked aside from worker marks. Approximate diameter of plate 9.75". Approximate height of serving dish1.87", width 11.25", depth 8.75". Approximate length of ladle 6.5". Provenance: Property from the Private Collection of Mrs. Nancy Rutledge Pogue, Blufton, South Carolina (wife of Mr. William Pogue, who served as an heir to the H. & S. Pogue Company department store chain based in Cincinnati, Ohio).
