German or American, first quarter 19th century. A hand carved and polychrome decorated armchair having turned urn finials and Baroque style polychrome crest carved with scrolling leafy foliage and centered with husk carved medallion enclosing the owners name and date "MARIA HAUSCHILDTS 1814" (likely made to commemorate a birth or marriage) and supported by five bobbin turned spindles, the curved arms supported by three similar spindles enclosing the trapezoidal board seat raised on ring turned legs united by double turned side stretchers. Chair is accompanied with a custom blue cushion. Approximate height 37.75", width 24.75", seat depth 15.5", seat height 15". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
