French, mid to late 19th century. A set of four carved walnut Renaissance Revival side chairs, each having carved lion's head finials over a rectangular tooled leather back, decorated with a lion's head flanked by phoenixes with decorative rosette nail heads, over a rectangular tooled leather seat, decorated with a lion's head surrounded by dragons, with decorative rosette nail heads, on four turned and fluted legs with an H-stretcher and turned ball feet. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 35.75", width 18.5", seat depth 16", seat to floor 19". Provenance: From the Estate of a prominent publisher and philanthropist, Greenwich, CT.
