School of William Powell Frith, R. A. (English, 1819-1909), "The Country Doctor"-1875, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "W.P. Firth 1875", paper label on verso of stretcher from Robert J. Perham, Fine Paintings, Tockington Court, Bristol, England with typed information on paper including registration number. Figural oil painting in the manner of Firth with scene possibly referencing, Honore de Balzac's "Le Medecin de campange (The Country Doctor)", circa 1833. Two women sit in back left of near thatched roof cottage reading book, doctor and his wife walk down stepped path hear a young child with curled hair holding flowers, boy holding the reins of a white saddled horse with resting dog under foot amid a wooded forest with dirt path. Framed approximately 27" x 35.75". Unframed approximately . Provenance: From the Private Collection of the Owner of Chelsea House. Note: While Frith did paint a number of literary subjects in his career, by the 1850s he had stopped doing so due to his success as an artist. Since this work is dated 1875 and includes a literary scene as well as pastiche elements found in many of Frith's typical works, we believe this painting to be of the period but likely, produced by a close follower of the artist.
