Anthony Quervelle (Paris/American, 1789–1856), circa 1820-1830. Important Philadelphia carved mahogany with brass inlaid stringing sofa, secondary wood is poplar, having a scrolled tablet crest and padded, upholstered arms having large boldly carved scallop shells each above a dove tailed drawer enclosing secret compartment; one a sliding shelf, the other for a money box tray, the padded and upholstered back and seat with two matching bolster pillows, above a bolection-molded seat rail and raised on scroll carved and foliate decorated legs. Approximate height 32.5", width 91.5", seat depth 19.5", seat height 15.5". Provenance: Purportedly commissioned for the 1st Continental Congress, Chaplain W.M. Alexander Lynn and purchased from the Estate Sale of Mona Wood, Jacksonville, Florida.
