French, late 19th century. A pair of cast bronze torchieres, likely cast for the Paris Exhibition of 1889, each columnar in form, having a foliated acanthine capita over a fluted shaft, resting on a graduated base, with an ancanthine tulip resting on a ball, on three paw feet, the whole raised on a tripartite base. Each fitted with a custom tole shade designed to hold flowers. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 76.5", diameter 15.5". Provenance: From the Private Collection of the Owner of Chelsea House.
