Orange Hopkins (American (Litchfield, Connecticut), first quarter 19th century. A slender Federal tall case clock in cherry having a scroll-cut pediment over arched glazed hood enclosing conforming wooden dial decorated with gilt and polychrome roses, black Arabic numerals and signed in the center "O.HOPKINS LITCHFIELD" with 30 hour wooden movement, the case with tombstone door opening to pendulum and weights, the base with scroll-cut skirt. Backside of wood dial inscribed in pencil "overhauled/3-4-60/Ira B. White/Norfolk, VA." Approximate height 74", width 16", depth 9.75" Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014. Note: Orange Hopkins was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1791, and is thought to have learned clock making from his uncle, Asa Hopkins (Litchfield, Conn, 1742-1776) with whom he worked for several years.
