Chinese, late 19th century. A carved hardwood cabinet on stand, rectangular in form, carved in an allover low relief chinoiserie motif depicting figures in a courtly garden scene, with two cabinet doors with Greek key borders opening to reveal interior shelves and a red lacquered interior, painted with decorative landscape roundels, with a double base carved with scrolls and drops, on kang style feet. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 49.25", width 33.625", depth 18.825". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
