English, late 18th/ early 19th century. A George II carved oak slant or fall-front secretary or desk, having allover low-relief carved decoration, the fall with a dappled leaf border to the edges, centered with a dogwood flower and flanked by two daisies, with carved spiral designs, opening to reveal a writing surface and interior storage, with a central cabinet with a carved door, flanked by two fluted secret compartments, with four small drawers, two on each side, underneath open storage space accented with a carved scalloped border, with two short drawers over three long, each carved with spiral motifs and centered with a locking key escutcheon with applied brass pulls, ths sides carved with scrolled acanthus leaves in a diamond pattern, with roundels centered with dogwood leaves and daisies, resting on ogee bracket feet. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 45.125", width 45.7", depth 22". Provenance: From the Estate of a prominent publisher and philanthropist, Greenwich, CT.
