J. Merr (American, 19th century), 1866. A molded plaster bust-length portrait plaque of George Washington in his general's attire, with a gray wig, and navy jacket with yellow lapels, over a banner incised '1776', and having a fluted frame painted red green and yellow. Signed and dated "J MERR/1866" to reverse. Approximate height 7.75", width 6.625", depth 0.825". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
