English, 19th century. A Georgian inlaid mahogany secretary bookcase in two sections, the upper section having a broken or split pediment centered with fan patera above a pair of astragal glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves and electrified interior (later), the lower section with slant front opening to a fitted interior comprised of a central inlaid prospect's door flanked to one side by four valence pigeon holes and two short and one long document drawers, the other side with four valance pigeon holes and four short drawers, all above four graduated and beaded drawers, each with individual locking mechanisms, and raised on bracket feet. Tag to the backside "PHILIP HEAD & SONS/ REPOSITORIES/EGHAM, SURREY". Inscribed on retailer label in script "Miss Harboard (?) 26 Bureau (?) top". Approximate height 89.5", width 37.75", depth 20.87". Provenance: From the Estate of a prominent publisher and philanthropist, Greenwich, CT.
