A Cartier desk frame with ribbed exterior, monogrammed and engraved "XMAS 1941," with similar pocket frame; French vesta case, champleve enameled monogram AGV (Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt) inscribed on reverse "Derby Day May 26th 1909," with ruby cabochon thumbpress. Inscribed Cartier 14k, With French control marks for 18k. Largest 3 1/4" and 2 3/4". 101.8 dwt. Note: According to family lore, sportsman and businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt gave a gold matchsafe to each of the male guests in his box on (Epsom) Derby Day, May 26, 1909. The main race was won by Minoru, owned by King Edward VII. This was the first time that a horse owned by the reigning monarch had won the race. Alfred apparently traveled frequently between New York and Europe, especially London. He perished in the sinking of the Lusitania, 1915.
