The canvas depicts Ali at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, at the moment he is about to light the Olympic flame at the Games' opening ceremony. Ali, the 1960 Olympic Gold Medalist in boxing's Light Heavyweight division, was asked by the 1996 Olympic Committee to be the final torch bearer for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay.
