The photograph was taken at the 1996 PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, where Nicklaus received the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. The award honors athletes and sports figures who have embodied sportsmanship, leadership and philanthropy. In 1996, the award was renamed the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award in tribute to Ali the boxer and humanitarian.
