A used 1948 London Summer Olympics relay torch. The steel and aluminum torch featuring carved and traced Olympic rings is inscribed "XIVth Olympiad 1948/ Olympia to London/ with thanks to the bearer." The torch relay was run July 17-29, 1948, prior to the Olympic Games held in London, United Kingdom, from July 29 to August 14, 1948. The relay, nicknamed "relay of peace," was only the second Olympics torch relay. The first relay was at the 1936 Summer Olympics. The 1948 Summer Olympics was the first Olympics Games after a 12-year hiatus because of World War II. With post-war rationing, the event became known as the "Austerity Games."
