After William Morris Hunt (American, 1824-1879) A Naushon Beech . Unsigned, inscribed in pencil "J.S. Russell/S.S. Forbes" on the top bar of the stretcher, identified on two typed gummed labels and in similar pencil inscriptions on the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 in., framed. Condition: Patch reinforcement to c.r. edge of the reverse, canvas rippling, craquelure, discolored varnish, surface grime. N.B. The gummed labels duplicate information in the pencil inscriptions. They describe the work as "'A Naushon Beech'/Copy from Wm M. Hunt/by Mrs. _____" and provide the provenance as "Given to James S. Russell/by his Grandmother Forbes/about 1890."
