The Captain Elias Pratt II Eight-day Cherry Tall Clock, Asa Sibley, Woodstock, Connecticut, c. 1790, the pierced fret top with inlaid plinths and brass finials, fluted freestanding columns flank the line-inlaid glazed door over the sheet brass engraved roman numeral dial marked Asa Sibley/Woodstock in the arch within an engraved boss, fanciful engraved spandrels, recessed date dial and marked seconds, rectangular line and oval inlaid door with Federal shield and eagle escutcheon flanked by fluted quarter-columns capped with brass, the base with horizontally oriented mahogany oval, striped maple strip above the bracket feet and scalloped apron, eight-day time and hour-strike brass movement with pendulum and two cast iron weights, ht. 86 in. Provenance: By descent from the original owner, Capt. Elias Pratt II, of Sutton, Massachusetts, to the consignor. Note: Asa Sibley (1764-1829) of Sutton apparently apprenticed with Peregrine White of Woodstock, Connecticut. Active in town politics after he moved his family to Walpole, New Hampshire, he served as a selectman and town moderator between 1802 and 1807. Over 200 years later, the head of this Skinner department was elected to the same offices for over twenty-five years.
