Watercolor Portrait and Photograph of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel William Jay, 1865, the oval portrait with a full-length view of Jay in uniform against a stone wall with landscape background, in an oval mahogany frame with gilt liner, the back of the picture with handwritten note: "William Jay/Capt. & Bvt. Lt. Colonel/U.S. Vols. June 1865.," the accompanying photograph is a reproduction of an earlier image, framed watercolor ht. to 22 3/4, wd. 19 1/2 in. Note: William Jay (1841-1915) was a direct descendant of John Jay, Chief Justice of the United States, 1789-95. He graduated from Columbia College in 1859 and began his military service soon thereafter. He was on the staff of General George B. Meade when he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war Jay returned to Columbia and earned a law degree in 1868.
