Trunks, Uniforms, and Equipment Owned by Captain David Parker Smith, 26th "Yankee" Division, c. 1917-18, one trunk filled with newspapers and period magazines, another trunk filled with personal items, patches, a German feldmutze, tunic with "YD" patch, overcoat with "YD" patch, breeches, books, medical items, an American painted helmet, and a German Model 1916 helmet. Provenance: By direct descent to the consignor. Note: David Parker Smith was born in Meriden, Connecticut, on May 7, 1889, the son of prominent local surgeon Edward Weir Smith. David graduated from Yale University in 1910 and Yale Medical School in 1912. Soon after, he married Evelyn Lewis, joined his father's medical practice, and he and Evelyn had their first son, Edward. When the United States entered WWI, David volunteered for service and from 1917 to 1919 he served in France as a Lieutenant and Captain in the medical core with the field artillery of the 101st Yankee Division. Returning to Meriden after the war, he and Evelyn had two more children, David and Bethia (Currie), and he re-established his surgical career, continuing his family's local prominence. He died of natural causes in 1958. A wing of the Meriden Hospital is dedicated in his honor.
