Hummel, Johann Nepomuk (1778-1837) Methode Complete Theoretique et Practique pour le Piano-Forte. Paris: A. Farrenc, plate no. 227 [c. 1829-31]. First edition in French, folio, engraved throughout, stipple portrait of Hummel facing full-page lithographic facsimile of his musical handwriting before the title, 468 pages; rare with only one auction result from 1968; with a stamp of A. Farrenc's signature at the foot of the title, leather and gold-tooled ownership label of Marie Sontag on front board; bound in contemporary half leather with marbled paper boards, sewing structure intact and boards attached, but spine leather broken and becoming detached, 13 x 10 in. Hummel was a student of Mozart's, and lived with the composer for musical instruction for two years as a child. Joseph Haydn composed a sonata for Hummel in 1791. He also studied with Salieri as a child, and was friends with Beethoven.
