Daniell, William (1769-1837) Sketches of a Voyager. London: Daniell, c. 1820. First edition, oblong quarto, illustrated with twenty-six soft-ground etchings (including the title), bound in the original patterned paper wrappers with morocco label lettered in gilt; preserved in full modern brown morocco over boards with a replica of the original label on the front board; faint marginal dampstains and early marginal repairs to a few plates, minor foxing, the plate "Cattle" on lighter paper; pencil notes to title page, and other leaves, 11 3/4 x 9 1/2 in. William Daniell created the illustrations for the work Oriental Scenery , published at the turn of the 18th century. In this work, the aquatints fairly mimic the look of original sketches, and Daniell gives us landscapes, sailing ships, character studies, portraits of animals (domesticated and wild), and other views, both in Europe and abroad. The cheetah and elephant are notable. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
