Catlin, George (1796-1873) [Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio. ] [London: Chatto & Windus, 1875.] Folio, illustrated with thirty-one hand-colored lithographs after Catlin and McGahey printed by Day & Haghe (this issue published after Chatto & Windus purchased the original copyright from Bohn and contains six additional plates not presented in the earlier edition); this copy does not contain a list of plates; bound in half straight grain brown morocco, with the original gilt tooled and lettered label on the front board, green textured cloth boards, occasional spotting to interior, brightly colored plates, 23 x 15 1/2 in. Catlin ventured into the far west in the 1830s, along with explorer William Clark, painting Native American Indians, collecting artifacts, and compiling ethnographic notes. Ultimately producing more than 500 paintings, now housed at the Smithsonian, Catlin also saw the successful publication of his images and prose in book form. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
