M'Ilvaine, William Jr. (1813-1867) On the Walls of Panama , Watercolor on Paper, 1850. Watercolor of the Panama coast painted during M'Ilvaine's journey in the Gold Rush of 1849, matted and framed, titled in ink on the mat, some wear to the frame around the edges, 6 3/4 x 9 1/2 in. M'Ilvaine sailed to San Francisco from Peru in the spring of 1849, arriving on June the first of that year. He spent five months sketching in California and published his work in a book titled Sketches of Scenery and Notes of Personal Adventures in California and Mexico . This image, although not published in the book, was likely created at the same time. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
