Lewis, James Otto (1799-1858) The Aboriginal Port Folio. Philadelphia: Lehman & Duval, 1835-1836. Folio, illustrated with seventy-two hand-colored lithographs, bound without the three letterpress broadside prospectus advertisement leaves to parts 1-3, the blue printed wrapper from part eight is used as the title; bound in green textured cloth boards with a matching green morocco spine; occasional professional repairs to plates, very good, 18 1/2 x 11 in. Lewis's very early plate book on Native American Indian tribes was ambitious and one of the first of its kind. His work covers the Potawatomi, Winnebago, Shawnee, Sioux, Miami, Fox, Iowa, and other tribes, including people living near Prairie du Chien, Fort Wayne, Fond du Lac, and Green Bay. The publication itself was complicated and never properly completed. Conceived as a ten part series, the publisher went bankrupt without completing the ninth part. The text was never printed (a projected eleventh part), and is found today with varying numbers of plates. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
