Hancock, John (1737-1793) Autograph Letter Signed, [no place, early January 1776]. Single leaf of laid paper, addressed on the verso to his wife, inscribed on one side, silked, old folds, minor loss, lightly dampstained, in a custom box, 9 1/4 x 7 in. "Mrs. Hancock, I do not want the carriage. Pray send Harry directly on horseback with the inclos'd letter to Capn. McPherson, his worthy son is kill'd, which we this moment have by Express." Hancock refers to the death of General Richard Montgomery (1738-1775), which occurred during the assault on Quebec on 31 December 1775. The news, carried by the express rider, would have arrived just after the New Year. Hancock also refers to the death of Montgomery's aide-de-camp, Captain John MacPherson (1754-1775).
