Astor, John Jacob (1763-1848) Autograph Letter Signed, New York, 17 January 1816. Large quarto watermarked wove bifolium, inscribed over one page, with conjugate address label attached and intact, with postal cancelation. To William Whann (1769-1822), cashier of the Bank of Columbia, seeking repayment of a $15,000 loan made by Astor to the government during the War of 1812. Old folds, slight discoloration to bottom right corner, generally good, tears in self-envelope from the original opening of the letter, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. "Dear Sir, I have rec'd your letter of the 13th inst and at same time Mr. Tucker send [?] bill for 15,000$ this is the sum of the draft you held for me without interest. The interest amounts to about 1200$ whether government in such cases allow interest or not you not say. I do not see why they should not. Will you please to inform me on this subject & at same time tell me where I am to apply for the recovery of the same. I regret extremely your indisposition and hope most earnestly that you will soon be restored to perfect health. I am, Dear sir, with great regrets your obdt servt, John Jacob Astor"
