Washington, George (1732-1799) The Prayer at Valley Forge. New York: John C. McRae, 1866. Large engraving on wove paper by John C. McRae, after H. Brueckner's painting, matted, some foxing to upper corner and left blank margins, very faint dampstaining, matted, 26 x 20 in. "In the 1790s, Washington biographer Mason Locke Weems made up the story of Quaker farmer Isaac Potts observing Washington praying in an oak grove at Valley Forge. American soldiers' courage and endurance during the Valley Forge winter gained renewed meaning during the American Civil War. John McRae based his engraving of Washington's "Prayer at Valley Forge" on an 1866 painting by Henry Brueckner." (Library of Congress).
