Pair of Brass and Iron Faceted Lemon-top Andirons, Nathaniel Johnson, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1816-23, belted lemons with faceted tops, urn finials, on facet shafts, spurred cabriole legs with slipper feet, brass-covered curved billet bars with conforming log stops, the brass billet bar covers marked "N. JOHNSON/FOUNDER/BOSTON," ht. 24 1/2, wd. 13 1/2, dp. 26 1/2 in. Note: Nathaniel Johnson was born in Boston in 1798. He began his business as a coppersmith and founder in 1816, advertising "a large assortment of Brass ANDIRONS, of handsome patterns and the newest fashions" among his wares in the Boston Daily Advertiser . This pair with curved billet bars is among the most expensive he offered in that line. He left the copper and brass business in 1823 and became a jeweler. He died in 1855.
