George Hartwell (Massachusetts, 1815-1901) Portrait of Mary A. Crockett of Lincoln, Maine Unsigned, identified on a label affixed to the backing board. Oil on canvas, the subject seen full-length, in a pink dress and holding a rose in one hand and a basket of berries in the other, a house visible beyond, 34 1/4 x 28 1/2 in., in a period giltwood frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch including to a minor horizontal repair in the subject's left arm. Note: A framed letter written by Clara Endicott Sears, February 27, 1939 describing the painting accompanies the lot. In the letter it is noted that Mary A. Crockett was an aunt of the letter's recipient, Mrs. Gertrude Edwards Pinkham of Lincoln, Massachusetts, and describes the child as "stiff looking" with "a basket in one hand & rose in the other."
