$14,400
oil on wood 30. 5 x 14 cm (12 x 5 1/2 in.) signed lower right and dated 1765 lower left PROVENANCEAcquired directly from the Artist by Myron Lyzon King of Hampton Bays, Long Island, neighbor and close friend of David and Marussia BurliukHomage to Lucas Cranach amply demonstrates Burliuk's enthusiasm for both the style and medium of the old masters. Burliuk painted his nude in a well defined rectangular space so as to make the wood panels, so associated with the old masters, stand out. And with his typical flair and famous tongue-in-cheek manner, he dated the painting 1765. Whether Burliuk knew or not that this was several hundred years too late for Cranach (and it almost certain that he did), it adds a touch of whimsy to a painting that is already a rare example of subject-matter for such a prolific artist.
