English. Third-quarter of the 19th Century. After a model by Hugues Protat, most likely a depiction of Othello. Incised H. Protat 1863, the underside unmarked. The bearded moor in 16th/17th Century attire with arms upheld in a presenting pose, raised upon a circular base with a garland and scrolled feet. Height 27 ½”. Diameter of base 11 ½”. (Cond: good overall condition) (500/700) Note: Cf. Hugues Protat was appointed Modeling Master at the Stoke School of Art in 1855, and was also a highly regarded modeling sculptor of monumental wares at the Minton firm, best known for his heron stands and figural ewers. Protat was the sculpture of the portrait busts adorning the Durbar Court, The Colonial Office, Whitehall, London.
