Scrimshaw grease horn with sawtooth rim and wrought iron hanger. Inscribed with military designs and "IV Battn. Jersey Militia 1777"; measures approximately 9" long. Note that bovine horns were used in this manner due to the fact that they are naturally hollow and water proof. New Jersey first raised regiments for Continental service in late 1775, this horn was created for/by someone in the Fourth Battalion Jersey Militia.
