$480
Scrimshaw powder horn of bovine hoof with wood plug and pouring spout, and leather loops for strap. Inscribed "Philadelphia" with a city and harbor scene and "Ens. Henderson Bn. Penna. Musquitteers And 1777 A.D". Measures approximately 8" long. "Ens" indicates the rank of Ensign in the Continental Army, which was the lowest ranked commissioned officer in the Army during the Revolutionary War. The rank of ensign was abolished in the U.S. Army in the Army Organization Act of 1815. Research indicates that it possibly belonged to or was etched by Ensign John Henderson of County Down, Ireland. Born in 1747, emigrated in 1758, and served in the Pennsylvania military in 1777. In overall good condition, all measurements are approximate.
