18th Century oil on canvas portrait of Saint Jean Eudes (C. J.M.). Unsigned and unframed, lined, and needs conservation. Measures 32-3/4" in height with width of 23-3/4". Saint Jean Eudes was born November 14, 1601 and was a French missionary and priest who founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, as well as The Order of Our Lady of Charity. He was also the author of the sacred prayers "Divine Office of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary". During his lifetime he was known for having ministered to the sick, and buried the dead during severe bouts of plague in 1627 and 1631. He was canonized on May 31, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. His feast day is August 19, and he is also honored by The College of St. Jean-Eudes in Quebec, Canada as well as by the St. John Eudes Parish in Chatsworth, CA.
