In 1927 he moved to Los Angeles and, as a self-taught artist, established a studio on Olvera Street. Wolo then moved to San Francisco where he worked for many years as a caricaturist-columnist for the Chronicle. He wrote and illustrated five children's books, painted murals in the San Francisco Bay area, and was well known as a puppeteer.
