Ink and graphite on paper, 13 x 21 in. (33.0 x 53.3 cm), framed. Condition: Drawing hinged at the top, minor toning. N.B. Jared French, together with Paul Cadmus and George Tooker, worked in a style that is now called Magic Realism. The three artists were based in New York in the 1930s-50s. The sitter of this drawing may have been Cadmus, close friend of French, and quite possibly his lover for a time. However, in 1937, French married Margaret Hoening, also an artist. For the next eight years Cadmus and the Frenches summered on Fire Island and formed a photographic collective called PaJaMa ("Paul, Jared, and Margaret"). During this period Jared French also painted murals for the WPA.
