Josiah Johnson Hawes (American, 1808-1901) Bowdoin Street, Boston , c. 1860. Unsigned. Albumen silver print mounted to board, diameter 7 in. (17.8 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Lightly faded. N.B. From 1843 to 1863, Hawes and his partner Albert Sands Southworth operated a studio recognized for its artistic and expressive daguerreotype portraits of members of Boston's elite and intellectual community. After the partnership ended, Hawes opened his own studio on Tremont Row, where he worked into the 1890s. In the center of this image is St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, erected in 1831.
